TIPS#12 Keynote: Learning from failure: ransomware and future conflicts

As we experience the knock-on effects of ransomware activities in critical sectors, we need to look at how we can leverage this experience to better prepare for future conflicts. In a hopefully level-headed, calm and thoughtful talk, we ask: what lessons can we take from our collective failures in addressing ransomware to be ready for a more directed, but still disrupted, set of attacks from more sophisticated and better resourced attackers? And what questions do we need to answer now, so we aren't left guessing in the future?

Matthew Olney is the Director of Threat Intelligence and Interdiction for Cisco Systems. He leads a group charged with working with both public- and private-sector partners around the world to identify and address security threats. His group also provides intelligence support to Cisco's commercial incident response organization and manages Cisco's response to large-scale security events. This team took lead in response to global events such as WannaCry, NotPetya, VPNFilter and Solar Winds. Over the course of the past 15 years of working with Sourcefire and Cisco, Matthew's roles have also included vulnerability development, detection logic creation, and application development and he has been awarded a patent for his work on cutting-edge security analysis engines.
